SEE FROM SPACE, JAPAN REACTOR CRISIS

Reactors Japan, seen from space Satellite image from DigitalGlobe / Getty Images
A plume of white steam billows from the destroyed reactor 3 (the structure of a second from left), at the center of Japan Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power, as seen in a satellite image Wednesday, two days after the explosion blew the roof of the building secondary containment unit.

Different levels of damage are visible in all four reactors at the left, while the two facilities of a high white rectangle to the right, the buildings of the reactors 5 and 6, remain intact.
The authorities on the site are being used increasingly to desperate measures to quell the worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, which began after the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused loss of power to cooling systems crucial to the station generator.
To avoid a catastrophic collapse, the authorities have tried to drop water from helicopters and shooting water cannons from military trucks'. But the levels of radiation are creating a hazard for workers and residents in a 12-mile (20 km) radius were evacuated. U.S. officials have called for a wider evacuation area and warn that it could take weeks to get the crisis under control.
